Creating Joy in an FQHC Environment: Structural and Relational Leadership Approaches to Workforce Burnout

Date and Time: October 20, 2025 from 1:00 - 5:00 PM PT
Overview
Healthcare worker burnout has reached a new high, leaving an already-taxed health care system with fewer resources and perpetuating physician and staff shortages. As defined by the World Health Organization, burnout is a syndrome of emotional exhaustion, the replacement of empathy with negativity or emotional numbness, and a diminished sense of professional effectiveness. Burnout is not a new phenomenon within health care; occupational-associated stress begins during medical education, and challenges to all staff include financial losses and excessive administrative burdens.
Engaged and effective leadership, quality improvement strategies, and interdisciplinary teaming are crucial elements to help practices succeed in addressing burnout and endurance training. Psychological safety and a structured approach to leading clinical environments are essential to reducing burnout. Successful teamwork involves a clear and compelling purpose, an enabling social structure, a supportive organizational context, and expert teamwork mentoring. Psychological safety underpins each of these pillars, and it is mediated by Relational Leadership (RL) practices.
This session will introduce a structural RL approach to preventing and reducing burnout in FQHC settings. A structural RL approach establishes and maintains psychological safety through specific activities for collaboration and trust at the site/team level.
